This morning I woke up to the sound of an incoming text message. We live in the first house of 5 in a row, and we all share a garage in the basement. My neighbour send me this message: "The fire dept. is here, the garage is flooded."
The last two of these 5 houses, lay on top of the garage. Their water pipes and meters are in this garage. We don't have a closed garage door, but an iron fence-gate (or whatever that is called in English). The last week, we had temperatures below -15°C (5°F), last night even below -20°C (-4°F) and so their pipes were frozen. Which shouldn't happen, cause the building company should have made sure the pipes were sufficiently isolated.
So, two days ago, our two neighbours, who both have babies, got stuck with no running water. They called the building company (who is liable for this), the water company and the people who installed the water pipes, but no one came to help. So the first day they defrosted the pipes themselves, and tried to isolate them, but they got frozen again anyway.
So, to make a long story short, tonight the watermeter bursted and our garage got flooded. What a way to start the day! Especially for our poor neighboors who have to borrow buckets of water from us, to flush their toilets and so on...
